Dave Roznar, 64 years old and lives in Oregon
Diagnosis: fracture due to fall Procedure in May 2008 Dave suffered a painful vertebral compression fracture when he fell while trying to repair something at his house—he twisted and fell 3.5 feet, landing on his back. “The pain was pretty bad if I got out of bed or twisted a different way. I took ibuprofen which helped for a while.” After receiving an MRI, his primary care physician referred him to a specialist for consultation. Dave heard about kyphoplasty, but the group of doctors (the Radiology Group at St. Vincent’s Hospital) mentioned that Vertebroplasty provided the same pain reduction as Kyphoplasty without the need to use a balloon that may expand, or disturb, the fragments even further. The doctor recommended having it done quickly, the sooner the better, so the fracture wouldn’t get worse. Vertebroplasty procedure would help fix the fracture because cement is stronger than bone! “Overall, the procedure was not a big deal. They got me in an hour early. I went in at 9 to do paperwork and was completely done in a few hours.” The extreme pain has reduced and Dave is getting back to his regular activities.
